About Poland, Maine
Poland was first settled in 1767 and incorporated in 1795; the name refers not to the country of Poland but rather to an ancient melody which was apparently a favorite of Moses Emery, an early settler to the area and the representative to the court where the town's incorporation was made official. The town quickly became famous for the reputed curative qualities of the waters of the natural springs in the area, and even today Poland Spring water - still bottled here - is famous throughout the country. The water also attracted numerous visitors to the area, who stayed at the Poland Spring House inn through the 1800s and early 1900s. Today, the site is occupied by the Poland Spring Inn and Resorts, which includes a golf course as well as the Maine State Building, rebuilt here after representing the state at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.
With a population of approximately 6,000, Poland lies in the heart of Maine's lakes region, between Long Lake, Thompson Lake, and Tripp Pond to the west, Sebago Lake to the southwest, and Lake Auburn and the cities of Auburn and Lewiston to the east.
